Melasma

Melasma is a darkening of the skin on your face caused by excessive production of melanin which is the pigment that causes your skin to tan. That's why the sun, which increases melanin production, usually makes your melasma worse.

Melasma is usually caused by normal hormonal changes in women such as pregnancy or when taking birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy, Melasma is sometimes called the "mask of pregnancy." Men can also develop melasma.  Melasma only occurs on the areas of your skin that are exposed to the sun and this can further darken melasma.

Fortunately there are many effective treatments for melasma including chemical peels, topical bleaching agents and rejuvenative therapies.

These before and after pictures are representative of some of our most satisfied patients. Results and number of treatments will vary. A person's results will depend on a variety of factors. Photos are provided for example purposes only, and may not represent the results that all people will obtain.
